The Victoria Adult Literacy Council is committed to support and meet the ongoing educational needs of the adult learners in Victoria and surrounding areas. VALC recruits, trains, and supports volunteer tutors who teach and reinforce literacy skills and work on "English as a Second Language" literacy and communication skills with students. What is the Victoria Adult Literacy Council all about? The VALC is all about second chances. Our dedicated staff and volunteer tutors give adults not only a chance to improve their reading and English speaking skills, but also help those adults who need to pass a test for job training, gaining employment, or advancing in their job. Trained staff also works with those who have literacy difficulties because of learning/reading disabilities. This second chance to learn the skills that can most help them improve their lives and those of their families will help break the cycle of intergenerational illiteracy that abounds in our country and area. It’s a moving experience to see hope in the eyes of those we’ve helped when they talk about getting a better job by improving their English and learning skills. Click here for more information   GET INVOLVED PROGRAMS Basic Reading and English as a Second Language is provided as free one-on-one or small group instruction for adults who need help with literacy skills or who need help to speak, read, and write English. The Library Literacy Project is a cooperative effort with the Victoria Public Library to provide adult new readers materials and to encourage the use of the library. Students can get a library card and learn to locate and check out books. Tutor Training is provided by VALC at which tutors receive relevant training to become certified and are assigned a student. No previous teaching experience is necessary for certification, but must be a high school or GED graduate. DONATE NOW Donations to VALC are used for educational supplies, tutor training, student meestudent meetings and activities, and much more. Donations may be made in honor of a special person, as a memorial, an Adopt-a-Non-Reader donation, or as a general contribution. There are also fundraising events such as the Adopt-A-Non-Reader Campaign, the Knowledge Bowl. and the Carino's Wine Tasting Dinner.
